As some of you may have realized, last night was the Video Game Awards. As well as handing out nice mementos to the winners and playing host to a large amount of bonhomie and back-slapping, the VGAs also showcased a few new and exciting things. One of these new and exciting things was a two-minute long cinematic for Bungie’s forthcoming Halo: Reach. Check it out.
See? We do love you. The multiplayer beta is rumoured to be going live at some point in the first half of 2010, so those of you canny enough to hold on to your ODST discs will be able to get in when it launches.
I think we can all agree that is a mightily enticing cinematic right there, and it underscores the improvements made now that Bungie has switched to a new game engine. This is especially impressive given that in this tweet Bungie confirmed the trailer seen here is made entirely using the in-game engine, and not prerendered graphics.
Geoff Keighly wanted to smash any rumors going around that the Halo: Reach piece shown at the VGA’s this year will not be Computer Generated. He did so by tweeting to his many followers. The tweet read,
Whether or not it will be live action or in game footage is still unknown. The one thing we can all count on is it NOT being computer generated. It looks like we have to wait until December 12th to find out exactly what it is.
Geoff Keighley let out some pretty big news today via Twitter concerning the VGA Awards, which happens on December 12th, 2009 at 8 PM Eastern. Apparently the world premiere of the newest game from Bungie, Halo: Reach will take place on stage in Los Angeles. The following is what Geoff Keighley had to say.
“The world premiere of HALO: REACH happens only at the 2009 Video Game Awards, Live 12/12 on Spike.”
Very little is currently known about the game, except that it is an FPS. Despite this lack of knowledge, many are hopeful it will bring closure to what seems to be a never ending Halo series. Details of the game’s story and setting are expected to come from the premiere during the show.
Also concerning the VGAs, voting is open for players to choose which games are the best of the best in 28 different categories. Choose wisely, as the results of the voting are declared on Spike TV throughout the show.
MLG forum user (and MS Paint fanatic) ToM MoReLLo claims to have played Halo: Reach, and was somehow able to nab multiple blurry screenshots of the game as evidence. Now, when we say blurry we mean blurry. In fact, the classic images of Bigfoot were of higher quality than some of these screens. Perhaps our natural skepticism is taking over, but we’re taking these images with a rather large grain of salt.
As for details, the forum post claims Reach will feature squad-based combat and perks, similar to that of Modern Warfare. Squad based mechanics certainly make sense, considering former Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter creative director Christian Allen joined Bungie in 2007. But again, grain of salt.
Halo: Reach — Bungie’s final title in the Halo universe — is expected to ship in 2010. Microsoft has yet to reply to our request for a comment on the images.
