A lot of upset has been swirling around the Champions Online community lately. Much of it has been due to the announcement of a paid zone expansion and implementation of a “Kitchen Sink” patch that was pushed out too soon. In an effort to heal wounds and correct mistakes, Cryptic has released a new State of the Game targeted at addressing player concerns.
There are a couple big things to take away from this news. For one, the expansion is now completely free. It’s also now known as Champions Online – Revelation and is due out in mid-March 2010. New play areas, new powers, new rewards, and greater challenges are all promised by Cryptic. Expect a tidal wave of screenshots, videos, interviews and sweet juicy information in the coming weeks.
The other big change is the way in which the Champions Online team is interacting with the community. They’re adding a bevy of new features and community events — like a Cryptic Studios Supergroup in-game — that should help open up the lines of communication and hopefully add some much needed transparency to the game.

For the holidays, Champions Online presented their fans with an especially nice surprise: a gigantic, slavering teddy bear bent on the destruction of…well, everything. So how did you like it?
Randy “Arkayne” Mosiondz is the lead designer for Champions Online who created a forum thread today for fans to give feedback on their first ever winter event. The thread asks for your top three likes, your top three dislikes, and what you would like to see in future holiday events. Players have been giving feedback here and there up until now, but the thread will serve as a central place for the CO design team to hear how the player base feels. They’ll take the answers into account as a guide to creating future events, so if there are some things that really stood out to you during the winter event — either good or bad — this is the time and place to be heard by the developers. The thread can be found at the official forums, so head over and give your take on the event.

A few weeks ago, Champions Online put out the call for your best festively-themed screenshots in their Winter Screenshot Contest. They began this by saying that winter was “almost here” to which one reader replied that he’d spent 30 minutes defrosting his car and winter is not “almost” here, it “is” here. So now that winter has arrived, Cryptic was ready to see the community’s take on it. Whether it be a peaceful snowy scene or a raucous holiday celebration, they wanted to see your favorite shots.
The response was very enthusiastic — the submission thread hit fourteen pages in nine days, and Cryptic announced the five lucky winners of the contest on Tuesday. The submissions ran the gamut from quiet and peaceful to loud and celebratory to funny.
Each of the winners will receive a code for an in-game Retro Destroyer action figure. All of the submissions can be seen on the forum thread, while the five winning screenshots can be viewed here. Congratulations to the winners!

Today we bring Star Trek Online fans two big chunks of information and a whole slew of Klingon screens, too. First is a short trailer featuring Zachary Quinto laying down dialog for the game. Make sure you watch the video until the very end, as there’s a fun extra you won’t want to miss.
Second — and arguably much more exciting to specific fans — is the reveal of Klingon gameplay. Klingons are PvP only, meaning their progression contains no PvE questing of any kind. Just how much information are we talking about here? Well, pretty much all of it. In fact, we’re kind of wondering why you’re still reading this and not looking below the cut, where vast amounts of Klingon gameplay treasure awaits.

Cryptic has revealed the free costume pieces in next week’s Nemesis Confrontation update, which come in addition to two unlockable costume sets. Among the new free costume items are some exceptionally sweet capes, although we’re sure many players will be filled with glee to see new weapons being added to the costume creator.
While these are only cosmetic costume options, they’re important to players who wield specific guns or swords. It may seem like a minor issue to some, but having an outfit that makes sense — and looks cool at the same time — is surprisingly important to players who revel in a game like Champions Online.
You can also now put guitars on the back of your characters; something that immediately reeks of potential. We have to wonder if guitars are going to be added as visual replacements for sword based powers, enabling us to whack enemies with our musical axes. If someone at Cryptic could make that so, it would be somewhere within the vicinity of pure awesome.
