The Last Great NHL November 6, 2007 Before EA Sports realized they didn't have to try, they made NHL 2002. Yes, it's been a long time since the players on this game were the best in the league. But this is the last in the franchise to actually play like hockey. The scores get up there a bit (your goalie will let in some softies), but the options in this game allow you to set things right. This is before big players skated at 1 mile per hour and looked like balloons. This is before defenders could steal the puck by breathing on you. The only downside: in 2-player mode, if you have a good scorer with speed, you can cut across in front of the net and put it in the far side. Play with the bars until the goalies catch up to this move, and you're set...at least until your PS2 breaks down.
NHL 2002---> Really a great game December 26, 2006 I usually do not like that many sports games because plenty of them are lacking in good graphics, or are too complicated to learn how to play. From the very start, I found that this game is fun, easy, and has fantastic graphics. My cousin brought it over my house one day, and we ended up playing it for quite a while... and I don't even like hockey that much! This game is a lot of fun and even entertaining to watch when others are playing. If you like hockey, that's great! But even if you don't, this would still be a GREAT GAME to own!
EA Sports at its best. September 10, 2006 EA Sports has done it again with NHL'02! There are some pros and cons to this game i think.
Pros: Funny commentary, Don Taylor is the best! Cool Big Hit,and Save camera. New Emotion Meter gives your fans a boost of whats going on.
Cons: The players look very unreal, there bodies are all jiggly and very dull. Not as good as NHL 06. The glass never breaks when you do a big hit to a player! No new features for NHl 2002
This game is fun to play, but everyone will be renting NHL '07 when it comes out.
"I haven't seen this kind of shilaking since my pancake incident!" -Don Taylor, commentary on NHL 02.
I've been blown away drastically by this one! August 18, 2006 This review is a little exaggerated (probably since I've been stuck with the 2000 edition for PC for the past 5 years) but I absolutely love NHL 2002. Here's why:
Graphics-9/10 The graphics in this game are spectacular. The player animations look very realistic, whether they're skating, shooting, passing, you name it. The celebrations after you score or win are fun too. Unfortunately, the faces all look similar, and sometimes their arms go through each other, but the latter problem is common.
Gameplay-8.5/10 The game, being a sports game, is pretty straightforward as far as during the match: score more than your opponent to win. It's a bit tedious, and the AI gets too many breakaways (no defenders to get in the way when they try to shoot) for my liking, but scoring isn't too tough and not too easy. Oh, and season mode is fun, understandable, and object-oriented if you think of it that way. The rewards system is fun too, with NHL cards to make playing funnier.
Sound-10/10 EA did excellent. The skating, the crack of the player launching a slapshot towards the net, and most of all the yelps when the players get slammed into the boards!
Other Stuff-1000000/10 The numbers don't make much sense, but this should: the color commentator Don Taylor is hilarious (he compared a huge crash to a finely tuned piano a few times!), the NHL cards rewards are funny (i.e. mile-wide stadium, chipmunk voices, big heads, etc.) and the "Big Hit" camera replays your aggressive actions in slow motion, complete with low voices. I love it!
Overal-9.5/10 I hope this helps you decide whether this game is a good choice!
best hockey game around September 10, 2003 this is the best hockey game ever ... this game is perfect if only they didn't put Mario Lemieux on the cover
